Seems like I found an alternative to
fuse-overlayfswhich doesn't suffer from the problems we see with it for rebuilds.Using:
(rather than the equivalent using
fuse-overlayfs), I obtained an environment in which I could happily remove directories like/cvmfs/software.eessi.io/versions/2023.06/software/linux/x86_64/intel/cascadelake/software/EESSI-extend/2023.06-easybuildcfr. EESSI/software-layer#556
